Pokémon starter decks are ready-to-play 60-card decks that let you play the Pokémon TCG straight out of the box. In October 2026 the official options are the Mega Battle Decks (Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex), the Mega Lucario ex and Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex League Battle Decks, and the 30th Celebration Battle Decks arriving October 30. Younger players can start with My First Battle, and Pokémon TCG Live gives you eight starter decks free.
This guide explains what each product is, what comes in the box, which decks are legal in the current Standard format and how to upgrade one. Every product detail was checked against its official page on pokemon.com. New to the game itself? Start with our how to play Pokémon TCG guide.
First 60-card deck: a Battle Deck, such as the Mega Gengar ex or Mega Diancie ex Mega Battle Deck. It comes with a playmat, coin and damage counters.
Ready for a League: a League Battle Deck. Mega Lucario ex (June 2026) is the newest, and its whole list is legal in Standard.
Young kids: My First Battle uses two 17-card mini decks and simplified rules for two players.
Free option: Pokémon TCG Live gives every player eight starter decks (March 2026 lineup).
Legality: Standard uses H, I and J regulation marks since April 10, 2026. Mega Battle Decks need 6–7 Trainer cards swapped before an event.
Not tournament legal: World Championships replica decks (different card backs) and My First Battle mini decks.
1. What is a Pokémon starter deck?
Short answer: A Pokémon starter deck is a pre-built deck sold by The Pokémon Company so you can play without choosing cards yourself. Current versions are called Battle Decks or League Battle Decks and hold 60 cards: Pokémon, Trainer cards and Energy that work together. Two-player boxes such as My First Battle and Battle Academy are also starter products.

“Starter deck” is what players call these products. Pokémon’s own names have changed over the years. You will see Theme Decks on older boxes and ex Battle Decks and Deluxe Battle Decks from the Scarlet & Violet years. Searching for “Pokémon structure decks”? That is a Yu-Gi-Oh! name; the Pokémon equivalent is a Battle Deck.
| Product type | Who it is for | Deck size |
|---|---|---|
| My First Battle | Young children and parents learning together | Two 17-card mini decks |
| Battle Academy | Two new players learning at home | Three 60-card decks with a game board |
| Battle Deck (for example Mega Battle Deck) | New players who want a full 60-card deck | 60 cards |
| League Battle Deck | Players who know the rules and want a competitive deck | 60 cards |
| Build & Battle Box | Prerelease events and quick 40-card games | 40-card deck plus 4 booster packs |
2. Which Pokémon starter decks are current in October 2026?
Short answer: The newest 60-card decks are the Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck (June 19, 2026), Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex League Battle Deck (December 2025) and the Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex Mega Battle Decks (October 2025). The 30th Celebration Battle Decks, Espeon ex and Umbreon ex, launch October 30, 2026.
| Deck | Launch (US) | Type | Standard legal as sold? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck | June 19, 2026 | League Battle Deck (Fighting) | Yes |

The Mega Lucario ex deck uses Lunatone and Solrock to move Energy into the discard pile, then Mega Lucario ex’s Aura Jab attaches it to your Benched Pokémon. Pokémon describes it as a deck for Trainers “already familiar with the Pokémon TCG (and its rules),” so it is a step up from a first deck. A Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck has been announced for mid-November 2026.
Legality in this table was checked card by card against the Standard rules for H, I and J regulation marks. Older starter products, such as the Charizard ex and Dragapult ex League Battle Decks, can still turn up in stores. They were built for earlier formats and may include cards that rotated out in April 2026, so check the regulation marks before you buy one for League play.
3. Which Pokémon starter deck should you pick?
Short answer: Pick by who is playing. Young children learn fastest with My First Battle. Teens and adults new to the game should start with a 60-card Battle Deck. If you know the rules and want to play at a local League, choose a League Battle Deck. To try decks for free first, use Pokémon TCG Live.

| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A parent teaching a child under 8 | My First Battle | Two short decks, a rulebook and Prize tokens; see our rules for kids and parents |
| Two beginners learning together | Battle Academy, or two different Battle Decks | Everything for two players; swap decks between games |
| A teen or adult new to the game | Mega Battle Deck (Mega Gengar ex or Mega Diancie ex) | A full 60-card deck with a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and a strategy sheet |
| Ready for a local Pokémon League | Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck | Standard legal as sold, with staples such as Secret Box and Fezandipiti ex |
| Not sure yet | Pokémon TCG Live (free) | Eight starter decks to try before spending anything |

4. What comes in a Pokémon starter deck box?
Short answer: Every 60-card starter deck comes with the deck, a deck box and something to track damage. Mega Battle Decks add a large metallic coin, damage counters, a double-sided playmat and strategy sheet, and a Pokémon TCG Live code. League Battle Decks swap the playmat for six damage-counter dice, a coin-flip die and two condition markers.
| Product | Cards | Accessories (official box list) |
|---|---|---|
| Mega Battle Deck | 60 | Damage counters, large metallic coin, deck box, double-sided playmat and strategy sheet, TCG Live code card |
| League Battle Deck | 60 | 6 damage-counter dice, coin-flip die, 2 condition markers, deck box, strategy sheet, TCG Live code card |
| 30th Celebration Battle Deck | 60 foil cards | Deck box, playmat, coin; one illustration rare-style promo (Victini or Zeraora) |
| My First Battle | Two 17-card mini decks | 2 playmats, rulebook, large metallic coin, damage counters, 6 Prize tokens |
| Battle Academy | Three 60-card decks | Game board, rulebook, tutorial guides, 3 deck boxes, coin, damage counters, TCG Live code card |
Mega Battle Decks launched at $14.99 each, and the upcoming Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck is listed at $29.99. Prices change over time and from store to store, so check a current listing before you buy.
5. Are Pokémon starter decks legal in the Standard format?
Short answer: Only if every card has a legal regulation mark. Since April 10, 2026, Standard allows cards with the H, I and J marks, plus older prints of a card that has a legal reprint. Both current League Battle Decks pass as sold. The Mega Battle Decks each need six or seven rotated Trainer cards replaced before a tournament.

The 2026 Standard rotation announcement removed G-mark cards on April 10, 2026 (March 26 on Pokémon TCG Live). The regulation mark is the small letter in the bottom-left corner of a card; our card anatomy guide shows where to find it.
| Deck | Cards to replace for Standard | Easy legal swaps |
|---|---|---|
| Mega Gengar ex Battle Deck | 2 Arven, 1 Iono, 3 Nest Ball | Lillie’s Determination, Dawn, Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Ultra Ball |
| Mega Diancie ex Battle Deck | 2 Arven, 1 Iono, 3 Nest Ball, 1 Professor’s Research | Lillie’s Determination, Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Ultra Ball |
| Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck | None | Already Standard legal |
| Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex League Battle Deck | None | Already Standard legal |
Arven, Iono and Nest Ball have no reprint with a current mark, so they can’t be used in Standard; for example, the Nest Ball card page on Limitless lists it as not legal in Standard. Casual games at home can use any cards both players agree on. Our Pokémon TCG formats guide explains Standard, Expanded and other ways to play.
6. How do you play your first game with a starter deck?
Short answer: Read the strategy sheet first to learn the deck’s main Pokémon and plan. Then shuffle, draw 7 cards, put a Basic Pokémon in the Active Spot and up to 5 on your Bench, and set 6 Prize cards aside. Each turn, draw, attach one Energy, play Trainers and evolve, then attack. Take all 6 Prizes to win.

- 1. Learn the main line. Most decks build to one big Pokémon ex. Find its Basic and Stage 1, and the Trainer cards that search for them.
- 2. Bench a backup. If your only Pokémon in play is Knocked Out, you lose, so put a second Basic down early.
- 3. Count Prizes. A Pokémon ex gives up 2 Prize cards and a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex gives up 3.
- 4. Swap decks. Play the same matchup a few times, then trade decks with your opponent to learn both sides.
Our how to play Pokémon TCG guide covers setup, turns, attacks and Special Conditions in full.
7. How do you upgrade a Pokémon starter deck?
Short answer: Replace any rotated cards first, then make the deck more consistent. Add copies of your main Pokémon line, add search and draw Trainers such as Ultra Ball and Lillie’s Determination, and cut one-off cards that don’t fit the plan. Keep exactly 60 cards, with no more than 4 of any card except Basic Energy.

- Fix legality first. Swap the Arven, Iono and Nest Ball in a Mega Battle Deck, as shown in the table above.
- Thicken the main line. Many players buy a second copy of the same deck to reach 3–4 copies of the key Pokémon.
- Add draw and search. Consistency Trainers matter more than a second attacker. Our Trainer card guide explains which do what.
- Test, then change one thing at a time. Play several games after each change so you can tell what helped.

8. What are the free Pokémon TCG Live starter decks?
Short answer: Pokémon TCG Live, the official free app, gives new players eight starter decks. The lineup added in March 2026 is Dragapult ex, Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Lucario ex, Mega Manectric ex, Mega Sharpedo ex, Mega Venusaur ex, N’s Zoroark ex and Steven’s Metagross ex, released alongside the 2026 Standard rotation.
| TCG Live starter deck | Main idea |
|---|---|
| Mega Charizard X ex | Oricorio ex attaches Energy; Inferno X discards Energy for big damage |
| Mega Lucario ex | Aura Jab reattaches Energy from the discard pile |
| Mega Venusaur ex | Moves Basic Energy around with a 380-HP attacker |
| Dragapult ex | Spreads damage counters onto the Bench |
| N’s Zoroark ex | Copies attacks from your Benched N’s Pokémon |
| Steven’s Metagross ex | Several attackers powered by an Energy-attaching Ability |
| Mega Manectric ex | Eelektrik recycles Energy for a 330-damage attack |
| Mega Sharpedo ex | Hits harder once it has damage counters on it |
Pokémon’s own TCG Live starter deck strategy guide has the full list for each deck. The physical Mega Battle Decks and League Battle Decks also include a code card to play that deck in the app.
9. Where can you buy Pokémon starter decks, and how do you look after one?
Short answer: Official decks are sold at the Pokémon Center and wherever Pokémon TCG products are sold, including local game stores and big retailers. A local game store that runs a Pokémon League is a good place to buy, because you can learn and play there too. Buy sealed boxes from trusted sellers, and sleeve a deck you play often.

- Find a League. The Play! Pokémon Event Locator on pokemon.com lists stores near you that run Leagues and events. Our first Pokémon tournament guide covers what to bring.
- Check the box list. Official boxes match the contents on pokemon.com; a box that doesn’t is a warning sign.
- Protect the cards you play. Shuffling wears card edges. Standard card sleeves (66 × 92 mm) fit Pokémon cards, and a 100-pack covers a full deck.
- Store the rest. Leftover cards from upgrades can go in a card binder. Our Pokémon card storage guide covers the options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the best Pokémon starter deck for a beginner?
A: For a young child, My First Battle is the easiest, because it uses two 17-card mini decks. For a teen or adult, a 60-card Battle Deck such as Mega Gengar ex or Mega Diancie ex teaches the full game. Players who already know the rules can step up to the Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck.
Q: What is the difference between a Battle Deck and a League Battle Deck?
A: Both are ready-to-play 60-card decks. Battle Decks are aimed at new players; the Mega Battle Decks include a playmat, coin and damage counters. League Battle Decks are built around a competitive Standard strategy and come with damage-counter dice, condition markers and a strategy sheet. They also cost more.
Q: Does the Pokémon TCG have structure decks?
A: Not by that name. Structure Decks are a Yu-Gi-Oh! product. The Pokémon equivalents are Battle Decks, League Battle Decks and the two-player Battle Academy and My First Battle boxes. Older Pokémon products were called Theme Decks. All of them are pre-built decks you can play straight out of the box.
Q: Can I use a Mega Battle Deck at a Pokémon League event?
A: Not exactly as sold. Since the April 10, 2026 rotation, the Arven, Iono and Nest Ball cards in both Mega Battle Decks are no longer Standard legal, and the Mega Diancie ex deck’s Professor’s Research is not either. Replace those six or seven cards with current Trainer cards and the rest of the deck can be used.
Q: Are there free Pokémon starter decks?
A: Yes. Pokémon TCG Live, the official free app for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, gives new players eight starter decks. The March 2026 lineup includes Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Lucario ex, Mega Venusaur ex and Dragapult ex. It is a good way to try several decks before buying a physical one.
Q: How many cards are in a Pokémon starter deck?
A: Most starter decks have 60 cards, the size of every Standard deck: Battle Decks, League Battle Decks, the 30th Celebration Battle Decks and each Battle Academy deck. My First Battle is the exception, with two 17-card mini decks that use simplified rules, and Build & Battle Boxes include a 40-card deck for Prerelease games.
Q: Are the World Championships decks legal for tournaments?
A: No. The World Championships Decks are replicas of real Worlds decks, but they have different card backs, silver borders and the player’s signature on each card, so Pokémon says they are not legal for tournament play. They are useful for learning how top players build decks and for casual games at home.
Q: Do Pokémon starter decks come with card sleeves?
A: No. The Battle Deck and League Battle Deck box lists include a deck box, a coin or dice and counters, but no sleeves. The Trainer’s Toolkit is one of the few products that includes them, with 65. A 100-pack of standard sleeves covers a 60-card deck, with spares for cards you add later.
A starter deck is the simplest way into the Pokémon TCG: open it, read the strategy sheet and play. When you are ready for more, swap in current Trainer cards and take the deck to a local League.
